Are Sushi and Sashimi the first thing you think of when you hear the words Japanese food?
You’re not alone! and it is indeed one of our most popular Japanese food on the menu!
As above, there are a huge variety of sushi. Some are more homemade styles, like temari sushi, inari sushi, chirashi sushi, that are relatively simple to make and would appear on the table casually at Japanese family meals.
For the average Japanese family, nigiri sushi is a treat for a special day. On new year’s day, birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebratory occasions, Japanese people may visit a sushi restaurant
or order a demaé 出前 delivery that would arrive in a sushi oké 寿司桶 and we squeal at the beauty of colourful nigiri sushi! Usually accompanied with a few maki rolls.
All about the hosomaki maki sushi roll
Hoso means thin in Japanese. Hosomaki 細巻き are thin comparison to their counterparts of futomaki 太巻き (futo = thick) or uramaki 裏巻き (inside out roll).
Maki roll is a rolled sushi, with sushi rice, nori seaweed, and delicious fillings like tuna, salmon, cucumber, avocado, oshinko pickles, tamago egg, unagi grilled eel, prawn tempura, asparagus… the possibilities are endless. The maki roll is so very versatile. Anything that goes with rice and nori seaweed is a potential winner ingredient!
Futomaki 太巻き typically hold three or more ingredients and become nice and thick in the process. Flavour combinations are limitless!
Uramaki 裏巻き is a popular maki sushi roll, mainly outside of Japan. Again, endless flavour and texture combinations have been explored and invented over the years. You can see our original mouth watering creations in the section ‘Special maki roll’ in menu below.
